RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports are that the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this operation for their expertise and their bravery," Healey said. "Including them were numerous UK service members stationed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
